Jessica Logan, Loving Spots Dalmatian Rescue
Knowledge! Results! Reliability! These words mean nothing to most dog owners, but to someone like myself who has evolved from an every day dog owner to the founder and main foster home for Loving Spots Dalmatian Rescue it means the world. For my dogs, and myself there is a bond now that was never there before. But, where the impact really is, are with our rescue dogs. Because of these three words and what they mean and what they teach the dog, it has literally meant the difference between life and death for most dogs!
More then a year ago, LSDR was just like the other rescue groups out there. Taking in and only placing so-called “well behaved” dogs. We took in dogs from shelters, pounds and as strays that had behavior problems and we only were able to adopt them out to a few select homes or not place them at all. The dogs that where not adopted out where taken to the vet and euthanized or I would keep them myself.
I searched for a trainer with training methods that would produce reliable results! We had foster homes try both clicker type training and positive treat re-enforcement?neither worked and dogs died because of it. The search ended when I found Dean Miller with Dogs California. I had finally found hope for Bones and Blue; both were rescue Dalmatians in our program on death row. Bones was rescued from a shelter and Blue was found as a stray. Both dogs were fully aggressive, with each other, people, and other dogs. They both had bitten my husband and Bones had bitten me.
Thanks to Dean and his Thinking Dog obedience and Behavior therapy program, these dogs and others like them can be placed in homes with children, dogs and other pets. Bones and Blue now live side by side and I am very proud to say in my home. In fact, both Bones and Blue are ambassador dogs for LSDR. They now have the confidence and ability to be placed into situations that they would have never been able to be in before. People are always amazed on how well behaved, obedient and social they are. I’m a parent that proudly tells everyone that they are rescues and about their road to recovery? both mentally and physically. Their story is truly what pet ownership and rescue is all about.
I would like to thank Dean for all his help and training knowledge and would highly recommend all dog owners to go through his program, hopefully to prevent any of these situations from arising.
Mr. K’s Halfway House for Hounds and Kitties Too
We would like to thank Dean for the time he spent volunteering at our shelter throughout 2000. We had several dogs that at the time were not adoptable until going through his program. This allowed permanent placement for these dogs. In addition he helped gain control of and teach several unmanageable Community Service workers, most of which were in their late teens and early 20′s, educating them on dogs and instructing several of them in training the dogs. Dean also ran the shelter while we were away on business. He has a great love for dogs and deep knowledge on canine behavior. Thanks so much for all your help.
